The Maker is a boutique curtain and interior store on the main street of Gisborne. We make quality custom made curtains, blinds and shutters, and offer a range of products for your interior and window coverings. We work alongside reputable brands and our workroom is on-site where our window coverings are locally made.
The Maker is Gisborne’s newest boutique curtain and interiors store and business partners Kirpal Kaur and Kate Thorpe are proud of what they have achieved since opening in July 2021.

Originally from India, Kirpal has a background in the sewing industry and moved to New Zealand in 2015 to study business. After completing her studies, Kirpal was employed as a curtain maker before deciding she would like to venture out on her own.
Kate has a background in business and a love of interiors and design, which, coupled with Kirpal’s knowledge and drapery skills, makes them a dynamic and enthusiastic team who offer a top-quality service.
All of the curtains are made on-site with a team of local staff lead by Kirpal.
Having products made on-site allows them to offer cost effective prices. Experienced workroom staff expertly sew a range of curtain types — sheer, pencil pleat, blockout, French pleat, Dutch pleat, or inverted pleat.
The range of fabrics is second to none and come from top-notch New Zealand fabric houses such as James Dunlop, Warwick, Hemptech, Ministry of Textiles, Textilia and Unique — some of which are exclusive to their store.
The interior blind range includes Venetian, roller, Roman and shutters, and there are automation options available.

A contractor is available to install all curtains, blinds and shutters.
The Maker offers a free measure-and-quote service, along with expert advice. If you are after a particular fabric they don’t have in stock they will happily source it for you.
A range of top-quality cushions and accessories are also available in store.
